Right before Thanksgiving, I was contacted by Runner’s World magazine to see if I’d be interested in being a featured blogger for their Runner’s World Holiday Streak. The idea of the streak is to run at least one mile a day from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. Of course I said yes, but for so many reasons other than the fact that Runner’s World was asking me to be a part of one of their stories.

#1. I was just coming off the Philly Marathon and definitely up for the challenge of running at least a mile a day.

#2. NYC is the best place in the world to get creative with squeezing in a run.

#3. The holidays/finals are certainly a time when fitness might fly right out the window in favor of studying, shopping, lounging by the fireplace and sipping hot cocoa.

(Ok, I don’t have a fireplace but you get the gist)

#4. I often commute with my two feet, so now I’ll just do it a little faster.

#5. It’s Runner’s World, people. I’m a total geek.

So far, I’ve run the following completely random at-least-one-mile runs:

  • CPR/AED class (damn near in New Jersey, it was so far on the west side of town)
  • To and from work
  • To and from the grocery store
  • Around and around the UN buildings (where security would let me go, anyway)
  • Regular ‘ol Central Park
  • The Outlaws’ neighborhood in sunny Florida
  • Random sprints up and down 2nd Avenue

So far, so good with the Streak. I’m discovering that I can get one mile done almost anywhere in the city, as long as I have my running shoes one. Well, except for on the way to CPR/AED class when I was wearing my sandals. I had a birthday party after that. No wonder my shins are so sore today!

Point is, it’s totally do-able. I’m sure I’ll come up on a day when I really have to bust my hump to figure out how to get that one mile in, but New York kinda lends itself to this sort of challenge. We New Yorkers commute via our feet and trains instead of cars and I personally wear workout clothes almost all day long because of what I do for a living. The weather has also been exceptionally warm here in the east coast and I am thankful there are no freak snowstorms to curtail my enthusiasm for my daily runs.

Fitness News Fridays: Black Friday

Did everyone have a good Thanksgiving? I hope you are all stuffed to the gills with pie and turkey and love and thanks! Hey, did you hear that I’m streaking? Did you get your streak on last night? I hit up the Outlaws’ neighborhood roads down here in Florida after everyone had left for a quick 3-miler, my first real run after the marathon, and managed to clock sub-8:00 minute miles. Sweet!

I know that some of you are going to be getting your workout on by MMA fighting the person in line next to you at Best Buy/Target/Bloomingdales this morning and good luck to you brave souls. I am going to take some of the Outlaws to the gym and show them how to get their post-Thanksgiving workout on New York-style. Look out, Florida!

So what’s happening in the world of health and fitness this week? Well, everyone is all about how not to gain weight around the holidays and how to portion control your meal. Too late today! In other news…

  • For those of you who are away from home this weekend and can’t get into the gym, Men’s Health has a Hotel Workout just for you.
  • Or, if you have a smart phone, you can download all sorts of helpful workout apps that will keep track of everything from your heart rate to your distance to your calories burned. Now that’s smart!
  • If you’re going to head out for a run instead, be sure to do a safety checklist before you hit the road.
  • Are you struggling with losing weight? Some of it is motivation, but some of it might be genetics. Either way, keep fighting!
  • If you’re working out all the time and not seeing any results, there may be a reason for that and it’s not just genetics or motivation.
  • I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, one exercise is never the answer for overall health and good fitness. Even yogis are figuring that out!
  • And lastly, if you are looking to get a fitness lady in your life a little something-something for the holidays, I just say that luluemon has this gym essentials kit that has all my favorites bits and bobs in it!

We’re Going Streaking!

Runner’s World is doing this awesome thing where they challenge runners to run at least a mile every day starting on Thanksgiving and ending on New Year’s Day 2012. It’s called the Runner’s World Holiday Streak. Of course, I’m totally in, as I am looking for a new challenge while I come down off of my high from Philly.
